Belmopan. August 27, 2020.

On August 26, 2020, Dr. Peter Allen, CEO of the Ministry of Public Service, and Mayor of Belmopan Khalid Belisle signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the establishment of the Public Service Walk of Recognition and Inspiration.

In the midst of COVID-19, the 2020 Public Service Awards Gala was cancelled. Instead, the Public Service Walk of Recognition and Inspiration has been created to achieve the same goal of the gala to recognize innovative and dedicated public officers. Located on the walkway beginning on the west Ring Road between the Belize Bank and Angelus Press and leading up to the stairs of the National Assembly building, the Walk will serve as a public pillar and potential framework for economic and social development in the City of Belmopan.

At the signing, CEO Allen said, “The Ministry of the Public Service appreciates the opportunity to congratulate public officers for their service excellence and to recognize their efforts in these new and innovative ways. This Public Service Walk of Recognition and Inspiration is intended to present another opportunity for this, and to do so in a way which adds also to the beauty and ambiance of our capital city… Each year, the names of outstanding public officers will be permanently installed on the walkway.”

Mayor Belisle added, “Belmopan, as we know, is the home of public service, and so we believe that it’s only right and fitting that this landmark be placed here in a place of prominence in our city … where it will be easily accessible to public servants, to the general public at large. It is wonderful that you have decided to not only make it a place of recognition but also a place of inspiration for current and future public servants to aspire to having their names placed on this Walk.”

The signing of the MOU signifies the partnership between the Belmopan City Council and the Ministry of Public Service in the installation and continuance of this new landmark. The declaration of the Public Service Walk of Recognition and Inspiration is anticipated to coincide with September celebrations and launches on September 18, 2020.
